A gold scarab recovered from a sunken trading vessel is among the collections at the Bodrum Castle and Marine Archaeological Museum, it has been revealed.

Today's Zaman reports that the gold scarab is believed to have belonged to Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.

According to the Turkish newspaper, museum director Yasar Yildiz reported that the scarab was recovered from the Uluburun wreck which dates back to the 16th century BC.

"The discovery that gave the archaeologists the greatest joy was a solid gold scarab which hieroglyphics indicate was once owned by the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti," he told the newspaper.

Mr Yildiz added that scarabs were carried by sailors as symbols of good luck charms.

Egyptian pharaohs and wealthy members of society were often entombed with various gold treasures and items. Tutankhamen was buried with a solid gold head mask.
