Sudbury miners 'strengthen local economy'

Friday, 24th August 2007 (1039 views)

The cluster of mines in Sudbury form a valuable contribution to the city's economy, it has been claimed.

According to Mineweb, demand for the mineral resources in the Ontario-based city - billed as home to the "second or third largest cluster of mining supply and service companies in Canada" - are set to grow over the next few decades.

The report suggests that Sudbury has spurred Canada's growth as a world leader in underground mining, due to the cluster of supply and service companies in the area.

Reportedly, such clusters have been cited by many economists as vital to future wealth creation, attracting foreign investment and boosting competitiveness.

"For the first time in the 120-year history of Sudbury mining, more people are employed in the MS&S sector than in primary mining, smelting and refining," Sudbury politician Dick DeStefano told the news provider.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Mining Association has asserted that Workplace Safety and Insurance Board premiums are to fall for the second consecutive year in 2008 due to improved safety performance in the sector.
