AngloGold Ashanti adopts environmental standard

Tuesday, 31st July 2007 (1055 views)

Gold producer AngloGold Ashanti has adopted the benchmark of environmental management, International Standard (IS) O1400, for its Obuasi mine in Ghana, claims a report.

According to the Ghanaian Chronicle, human resources manager of the mine Yiadom Boakye Amponsah told a conference in Accra that ISO1400 guides operations at Obuasi.

Mr Amponsah told attendees that "we admit though there were some negative impacts especially from historical activities in Obuasi before the 1980s, AngloGold Ashanti is working hard to meet its business and environmental targets", the news provider reports.

The company representative reportedly went on to say that, while environmental issues represent the core of the gold producer's sustainable development scheme, other initiatives are also significant.

Among actions cited by Mr Amponsah were a malaria control programme, medical sector donations and the development of a specialist eye clinic in the municipality of Obuasi.

The Obuasi mine is located some 200 km north-west of Accra.
