Former environment secretary 'to head PMDC'Friday, 27th July 2007 (1110 views) A former environment secretary and senator has been appointed the chairman of the Philippine Mining Development Corp (PMDC), it has emerged.Heherson Alvarez was appointed by president Gloria Macapagal to head the state-run company, which oversees the mining industry in the country. Mr Alvarez said: "We will push for sustainable development in the mining sector while adhering to the principles of responsible mining, strict enforcement of environmental and mining laws, protection for indigenous peoples and sharing of benefits for all stakeholders." The new mining head ran the Department of Environment and Natural Resources between 2001 and 2002 and was senator from 1987 to 1998. Mr Alvarez replaces Angelo Reyes as chairman of the organisation. During his time as the environment secretary, the new PMDC chairman pioneered a scheme which shared mining benefits 85 per cent - 15 per cent in favour of smaller miners, reports the Manila Standard Today.
