Guyana's minister of Amerindian affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues, has voiced a commitment to sustainable mining, it has been reported.

The government figure said at a recent workshop that "logging and mining activities will continue", reports the Government Information Agency (GINA).

She added: "As such, the position of the Government is to have a balance - one which sees the resources being used in a manner that will benefit the people. We support and encourage joint venture arrangements that are mutually beneficial."

Ms Rodrigues also said that involvement of local people in the mining sector could help the environment and poverty alleviation efforts.

According to the report, Amerindians are the largest landowners in Guyana and own around 14 per cent of the country's terrain.

Ms Rodrigues reportedly said that several Amerindian communities have used legal provisions available to them through the Amerindian Act, relating to benefit sharing in the mining sector and land rights.

GINA is the main communications agency of the Guyanese government.
