The mining industry in Canada has played an important role in setting corporate social responsibility standards, a new report claims.

Entitled Canada: Clean Technology Coming of Age, the report in Mondaq discusses the role of the mining sector in Canada's adoption of the principles of sustainability.

"The Canadian mining industry has played a leadership role in setting global standards in this area," claims the report's author, Cheryl Slusurchuk of law firm McCarthy Tetrault LLP.

According to the report, concerns about the environment are affecting business practice in industry sectors such as mining.

Broadly defining "clean tech" as products that improve efficiency while reducing energy output, pollution or costs, Ms Slusurchuk claims that investment in such technology is growing in Canada.

A recent report in the Kenora Daily Miner suggested that the Mining Association of Canada's (Mac) pledge to support sustainable mining is indicative of a changing industry.

Pierre Gratton, vice-president of sustainable development and public affairs for the organisation, told the publication that Mac's Towards Mining and Biodiversity Policy Framework is part of "an evolution" in the sector.
