Newmont Mining is to expand its investment in Indonesia, as long as the country's people support its presence, the firm has said.

Chief executive officer Richard T O'Brien told the Associated Press: "We need to make sure these people want us there, that they want a mine and all the opportunities that come with that."

The company is reportedly considering developing a third grinding mill at its Sumbawa Island-based Batu Hiiau mine and looking at the possibility of opening another mine in Indonesia's east.

"We're here for the long run," Mr O'Brien told the news provider.

Founded in 1921, Newmont Mining employs some 34,000 employees and contractors worldwide and holds core assets in the US, South America, Australia and Ghana, as well as Indonesia.

The gold producer states that it is committed to high standards in the field of environmental management, as well safeguarding the health and safety of its employees and host communities.
