Mining theme park 'to open in South Africa'Monday, 23rd July 2007 (1082 views) A new theme park in Rustenberg, South Africa, is to be inspired by mining, it has emerged.Known as Platinum City, the development is to be led by the Rustenberg Local Municipality and Archway Projects, reports Mining Weekly. Archway Projects' Simon Crawford told the publication that a simulated mine experience is to illustrate the extraction of platinum as well as 'cross-referencing' this process to other previous metals to give a broad picture of mining in South Africa. Reportedly, development could begin next year, with the aim of completing the park in time for the 2010 soccer World Cup. Archway Projects' Lebo Mabale told the sector news source that the firm wants the park to be a space where local designers could display jewellery for sale to visitors. "Tracing mining is like tracing the essence of South Africa, still in the throes of a pioneering spirit and can-do energy," he added. A recent report in Reuters suggested that gold mines in Ghana are increasingly accessible by female workers.
