An event in Juneau is set to celebrate the town's gold mining heritage.

Due to take place next weekend, Gold Rush Days invites people to take part in mining and logging competitions as a way of paying tribute to the sector's contribution to Juneau.

"We say the streets are paved with gold," Gold Rush Commission president Jerry Harmon told Juneau Empire.

Mr Harmon was referring to the fact that many of the town's roads were built on mine tailings.

Commission member Meg Day told the publication that the town's people appreciated the event as mining is an important part of their regional identity.

Carnival games and rides will also be part of the event.

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, was first discovered to be a gold source in the late 19th century.
