Idaho mine 'open to public'Wednesday, 27th June 2007 (1202 views) A former gold mine in Idaho's Cassia County is about to be reopened to the public, according to a report. The Black Pine mine on the county's eastern border should be accessible to citizens in 2008, district ranger for Forest Service Minidoka Scott Nannenga told South Idaho Press. Pegasus Gold mined the site between 1992 and 1997 but operations were finally shut down in 1999. As part of the mine's reclamation, waste rock and ore has been rinsed of its gold content and buried in topsoil, under which a waterproof layer prevents the leaching of metal-contaminated water into groundwater sources, explains the publication. Cassia County commissioner Paul Christensen said: "I think it's great that the public will have access to it. "It should open up some recreational opportunities." Meanwhile, Don Merrick, one of the explorers who was part of the team involved in the discovery and delineation of the Black Pine Mine, was recently appointed vice president of exploration with Gateway Gold.
