A new project in British Columbia (BC) is set to investigate the environmental effects of gold mining.

Run by Bralorne Gold Mines and the government of Canada, the investigation aims to develop the environmental sensitivity of the mining sector.

Entitled Assessing and Reducing Risks from Metals in the Environment, the assessment is to take place in south-western BC mine sites Bralorne and Pioneer, as well as exploring the Cadwallader Creek drainage basin.

"The results of this project will be used to minimise environmental impacts not only at this proposed mine site, but also at similar gold mines across Canada and around the world," said Gary Lunn, minister of natural resources.

"It is an excellent example of our government's commitment to working with industry to improve the health of Canadians and our environment," he added.

The project's stated aim is reducing the impact of gold mining on human health and ecosystems.

Bralorne Gold Mines' first gold claim was staked in 1896 and by 2005 the company had raised more than $3 million (£1.5 million).
