Mining 'makes modern life possible'Monday, 25th June 2007 (1134 views) Many of the conveniences of contemporary life would not be possible without the modern world, the Philippines' presidential spokesperson has commented.Ignacio Bunye pointed out that "many of the conveniences of modern life would not be possible without mining". Mr Bunye cited government initiatives to revitalise the sector as evidence of its prominent place in Filipino life, adding that anything that is not grown is mined. The government figure named coins, light bulbs and toothpaste as some of the products which rely on the industry for their existence. "Anyone who opposes mining, therefore, should be prepared to forgo all of the above and anything else that could not be manufactured, operated or used without mining," he said. The comments come as the country's government imposes a new revenue-sharing system on the sector, initiating a 50-50 split with mining companies. Meanwhile, at the recent Asia Pacific Mining Conference and Exhibition, President Arroyo said that mining would be a key factor in the drive to achieve sustainable development in the Philippines.
