Gold exploration firms Aranka Gold and Guyana Goldfields have commenced drilling at the Aranka gold property group.

According to the pair, the land in which the properties are based is composed of promising geological structures amenable to gold mineralisation.

While both companies are to explore the prospects on an even basis, Aranka is to act as project operator.

Geological mapping and sampling of selected areas has been undertaken as have airborne geophysical surveys.

"Two areas of historical workings have returned multiple high-grade sampling results from initial grab and channel sampling. Two drills have been mobilized to the eastern target area and drilling is ongoing," a company statement read.

Aranka and Guyana expect the initial drill programme to be completed in the next two months.

In addition to its interest in the Aranka properties, Guyana controls the Peters and Aurora Mine projects, which it claims are the two largest past-producing gold mines in Guyana's history.
