Gold 'revival' underway in Coolgardie

Friday, 22nd June 2007 (1119 views)

The historic mining town of Coolgardie in Western Australia is undergoing a revival, a new report claims.

According to Mineweb, two ventures in the area are leading a resurgence of gold mining in a town it describes as the "springboard" for the region's gold boom in the early 20th century.

A joint venture from Focus Minerals and Committee Bay Resources is reportedly producing positive results from its Perseverance project, while Barra Resources has reported record drill hits on the Dahmu Reef at Burbanks.

"A major attraction of Dahmu is its very close proximity to existing mine infrastructure allowing it to be exploited with minimal development," Barra's managing director Dean Goodwin told the publication.

Coolgardie was founded after gold was discovered there in 1892, sparking a new gold rush that saw the town's population grow to some 15,000.

The municipality was a key part of Western Australia's agreement to join the Australian Federation.
