Brazil mining sector 'to get behind forest preservation'Thursday, 21st June 2007 (1112 views) The mining industry in Brazil is set to support the preservation of the country's forests, according to an academic.Martin Weiss, PhD, claims that mining firms in the country are to "align themselves with the preservation of the forests". "Everywhere around the globe, international mining companies will come under increasing pressure to develop new, environmentally safe mining techniques", he says. Mineral resources in Brazilian rainforests offer "enormous opportunities" for investors, he added. Mr Weiss also reasons that deforestation is more of a threat to the country's forests than the mining sector, "All over the globe, international mining corporations are becoming or should become allies in the battle to protect the world's surviving forests, while prudently exploiting their vast riches," he said. Meanwhile, chief chief executive officer of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) Michael McPhie recently called attention to the mining industry's role in the move towards a more environmentally-friendly world in Interior News.
