Monday, 18th June 2007 (1827 views) Gold producer BHP Billiton has outlined a new approach to climate change. The company's four -pronged scheme is to encompass understanding carbon emissions through the "full life-cycle" of products, improving the management of energy and greenhouse gas emissions, investing $300 million (£150 million) in low-emissions technology over the next five years and using its technical capacity to assist other organisations in pursuing green initiatives. Chief executive officer Chip Goodyear said: "BHP Billiton has recognised that our company, as well as society generally, must make real behavioural changes and accelerate technological progress if we are to achieve a meaningful reduction in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions." "As a leader in the natural resources industry we have an important role in meeting the world's growing energy and resources needs. At the same time, we have an equally important role in minimising the impact of our activities on the global environment and supporting our customers' efforts to do the same," he added. BHP Bilton produces significant amounts of gold as well as its main products, copper concentrates, copper cathodes, lead concentrates, zinc concentrates and uranium oxide.
