Shipwreck exhibit showcases gold treasure

Wednesday, 25th April 2007 (1274 views)

An interactive shipwreck and treasure exhibition is due to go on show at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Florida, this summer.

The exhibition will feature hundreds of the gold artefacts recovered from the famous SS Republic shipwreck, which went down in rough seas off the coast of Georgia in 1865.

More than 51,000 gold and silver coins as well as some 14,000 other treasures were recovered, as part of an extensive deep-ocean archaeological excavation by Odyssey Marine Exploration, the world's leading shipwreck exploration company.

And the whole process, as well as the treasures recovered, will now go on show at Odyssey's Shipwreck! Pirates and Treasure show.

The exhibit has already proved a huge success in New Orleans, with interactive options added to the new show.

John Morris, chief executive and co-founder of Odyssey Marine Exploration, said: "The enthusiastic feedback our exhibit received in New Orleans encouraged us to bring the intriguing world of shipwreck exploration to the public in Florida and, at a later point, to other cities in America."

The exhibit runs from June 22, 2007 until January 31, 2008.
