News that a gold mining firm will being operations in Vaturu, Fiji, has been welcomed by locals and the interim administration.

Local employment opportunities and business enterprises are set to benefit from the arrival of Viti Mining (VML), according to Kadavu provincial council chairman Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo.

He told the Fiji Times that locals should welcome the company as another opportunity, aside from the controversial Vatukoula Mine, to benefit from the gold and minerals in the local region.

"Apart from the Vatukoula Gold Mine, the workers will appreciate this initiative by VML to start up mining operations that will involve the 14 provinces and Rotuma, Kioa and Rabi," Mr Josateki said.

"I would urge the leaders in the provinces to support VML since this will be an opportunity for our people to directly benefit from our natural resources."

VML has stated that around 200 new mining jobs could be created as part of the new gold mine, with operations beginning in the area soon.

"This news is very exciting because of gold deposits found on Kadavu. We would like to talk to the executives of VML about how, through the Kadavu Provincial Council, we can make the gold resources of Kadavu more meaningful to the people and landowners," added Mr Josateki.
