The Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) mining group has commenced a series of 14 projects to help benefit communities in Ghana.

The roll out, of which the first phase will begin in 2007, will see the development of a childhood development centre, five hand-dug wells and a three bedroom teachers quarters.

Welcoming the development, Mr David Yaro, Western regional co-ordinating director, said that developing partnerships with companies such as GFGL was vital if Ghanaian communities were to grow.

In order to create suitable conditions for a close working relationship to develop, Mr Yaro urged local communities in Ghana to curb the desire to involve the gold mining companies in litigation issues.

This might be relevant to a projected being considered by GFGL, which would see it double its Carbon-in-Leach plant.

According to Johan Botha, general manager of GFGL, the development of the plant could increase production of gold from 700,000 ounces to one million ounces each year.

He said that this would allow the group to undertake more development projects in Ghana.
