A unified marketing effort is required if global demand for jewellery is to be kept healthy, according to the managing director of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group.

Speaking ahead of the fifth Dubai City of Gold conference, Tawhid Abdullah said that concerted action was needed if a downturn in the market for gems and jewellery was to be averted.

"The global gems and jewellery industry has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 5.2 per cent since the year 2000, this is expected to see a slight slowdown in the coming years," Mr Abdullah explained.

"A unified jewellery marketing effort by the industry can help to overcome this."

The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group head stressed that industry segments such as gold, diamond, pearls and gemstones need to work in harmony rather than as separate classes of metals and stones.

Methods of utilising industry resources in an integrated marketing effort will be discussed at the Dubai City of Gold conference next month.
