Mining groups could be set to reap great benefit from new mines which have been identified in north-east Victoria and southern New South Wales in Australia.

According to geologist Dean Turnbull, a significant amount of the precious metal remains from a mining operations which shut down in the area in the early 20th century.

With a mining operation set to commence in Corryong next month by a new mining operation, Mr Turnbull said that while most of the gold fields which had been assessed finished operations in the 1900s, "places like Rendigan and Ballarat really ran right the way through to the 1950s".

He told ABC Regional Online: "We've got a massive advantage in that the mining stopped very early in the fields that we are looking at."

All of Australia's states possess some gold mining regions, with the Super Pit gold mine in Kagoorlie, Western Australia, being the country's largest open-pit mine.
