Thursday, 22nd March 2007 (4322 views) A $1.13 million (£559,000) package will be delivered by the Barrick Gold Corporation to a development organisation designed to benefit people in communities of Northern Peru.The Alto Chicama district is set to benefit from the funding package, with Barrick owning the Lagunas Norte mine in the area. World Vison Canada will be using the funding on a variety of projects in the area, including developing nutrition, education and employment skills. Barrick's package follows on from an ongoing project in the group's Pierina mine, situated 175 kilometres from Laguna Norte. With the group having delivered $1 million (£508,000) to communities over the past five years, the programme has created two new health centres, improved educational standards and helped to develop farming techniques. Dave Toycen, president and chief executive of World Vision Canada, said that the agreement "represents a broader opportunity to work together to help make life better for children and their families in communities where Barrick operates". He added: "It recognizes Barrick Gold's commitment to corporate social responsibility and World Vision's mission to empower the poor to build a better future for themselves and their children through sustainable development."
