The world's largest gold and diamond jewellery store is to be established in Chennai by Dubai-based gold jewellery retailers, the Joy Alukkas Group.

Located in the Prashanth Tower it will cover around 80,000 square feet of retail space and is estimated to open in the middle of June this year.

Tom Jose, who heads up the Indian operations team for Joy Alukkas, said: "The Chennai store will be our sixteenth in India and definitely the largest showroom in the world.

"We are planning to bring leading diamond brands, besides jewellery from Turkey and Singapore to offer not only the traditional but also designer jewellery."

He said the store will target traditional buyers of gold like women but will also tap into the lucrative teen market and offer special masculine styles for men.

Chennai is an extremely busy area with so much congestion that people find shopping a trial, according to a representative of Prashanth Tower, so the building has been designed carefully to become a pleasant bolt-hole for jewellery shoppers.
