Thousands of jewellery designs were received by the Pan-Arab Gold Jewellery Design Contest (PADC) last year and as a result, the World Gold Council was forced to extend the deadline for entries.

Some 8,000 entries were handed in which set a new record and the eligible designs were then subject to scrutiny from a panel of judges from both gold and jewellery manufacturer L'azure and the World Gold Council.

Once the entries were sifted through to provide a revised batch of 1,000, this was then shortened to 100 and then further decreased to 30 which were then all manufactured by L'azure which has retained the rights to all of these final designs.

Lama Saheb, PR manager of World Gold Council in Dubai, said: "[Until] 2005, the contestants came up with their own ideas. They designed a traditional set or something which was keeping with previous designs.

"However, this time we gave them a strict line to tread. We did not want anything that was too conventional. Jewellery should not be limited to a necklace, earring or bracelet."

This year, as well as in previous contests, the event known as Al Ibda'a Al-Hor has attracted many local designers to enter.
