Mine plans could provide hundreds of Vietnamese jobsMonday, 18th December 2006 (1560 views) Plans to build a gold mine factory in Vietnam could help to boost local employment prospects, claims a leading mining company executive.Charles Barclay, director general of Olympus Pacific Minerals, believes that Vietnam is set to become a major centre for gold mining and local residents will enjoy increased job opportunities as well as economic prosperity, reports VNE. Olympus Pacific Minerals has joined forces with a Canadian company as well as several local firms to build another factory close to the exiting Daksa mine. Total investment in the new plant is predicted to total around $30 million and the facility could be operational by the end of next year. "The gold mining industry will develop in Vietnam; therefore, it is time to think of providing staff for the industry," explained Mr Barclay. Reserves at the site are estimated to total around 7.2 tonnes and the company plans to exploit around 180,000 tonnes per annum, which will require around 300 to 400 workers at the facility. It is hoped that the operation will provide long-term employment for local villagers, with the mine scheduled to remain open for some 70 years.
