Barrick Gold nominated for international awardWednesday, 25th October 2006 (1324 views) Barrick Gold has been nominated for an international cooperation award for its Integrated Agricultural and Livestock Project in Peru.Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters announced its list of finalists for the 14th Annual Canadian Awards for International Co-operation this week. Barrick has been recognised for its commitment to responsible mining and its positive contribution to the social, economic and environmental development of the communities living near its Pierina gold mine. Since production began at the site in 2004, Barrick has helped local Peruvians to overcome poverty and improve their standard of living through community projects. In particular it has helped local people acquire skills in agriculture, carpentry, manufacturing, computing and other areas in order to boost their employment and earnings potential. Perrin Beatty, president and chief executive of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, said: "These awards honour excellence and corporate and personal commitment to international development. "The Canadians and people from developing countries involved in these projects are working to make a significant, sustainable and positive difference in individual lives, communities and countries." The winners will be announced during a special ceremony in Ontario on October 31st.
