Special edition preserve to feature real gold leaf

Monday, 25th September 2006 (2389 views)

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, jam maker F Duerr & Son is producing a special marmalade featuring flakes of real gold.

The limited edition preserve will be made with fine cut Seville oranges and include whisky and champagne, along with the flakes of 24-carat gold, and cost around £5,000 per jar.

A report in the Telegraph suggests that a single slice of toast adorned with the expensive spread could work out at around £76.

Those who are more interested in having it as a presentable ornamental condiment will be pleased to note that it will be sold in custom-made crystal jars for a more decorative appearance.

It's unbelievably good," said Mark Duerr, the Manchester company's managing director.

"We tasted it at a board meeting last week for the first time and were amazed. The whisky comes through immediately. The champagne's more subtle."

The whisky that is used in the marmalade is Whyte & Mackay's £32,000 vintage Dalmore 62. The champagne is Sir Winston Churchill 1996 from Pol Roger Cuvee.
