Charles I coin to fetch £200,000Thursday, 21st September 2006 (4312 views) A gold coin that dates back to the reign of Charles I is set to be auctioned next week.Auction valuations have set an estimated price for the piece at around £200,000, making it one of the most expensive items of legal tender or currency ever to be sold in the United Kingdom. The pre-Civil War coin, known in historical circles as a Triple United, is more than 370 years old and represents a monetary value of £3. Historians believe it to have been crafted by Abraham van der Dot, a Dutch medallist to the King, in 1630 and it has only come to auction after it was stolen during an armed robbery in 1974, before being recovered at a later date. The item will go under the hammer next Tuesday, September 26th, at London auctioneers Baldwin's as part of its Noble Investments collection.
