Yanacocha production underway again

Thursday, 31st August 2006 (1433 views)

Newmont Mining has restarted operations at Yanacocha in Peru, the biggest gold mine in Latin America, following the end of a road block by protestors, Reuters reports.

Agreements to peacefully end the protests were signed by Yanacocha representatives, members of the Peruvian government and delegates from the protestors.

"We are pleased that the Peruvian government has facilitated the peaceful resolution of the blockade and ensured the rights of our employees to work in a safe and productive environment," said Newmont's senior vice president of operations, Tom Enos.

Newmont ensured that safe passage to the mine site had been established before restarting production.

The mine will also take part in a commission to address the concerns of the protestors, which related to jobs and social spending in the surrounding area.

"Newmont and Yanacocha remain committed to work constructively with the Peruvian authorities and the duly recognised leaders of all local communities, so as to continue our ongoing investment in the sustainable development of the surrounding communities," Mr Enos said.

Newmont, one of the largest gold miners in the world, is concerned with "improving the lives of the people in the surrounding communities, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner".
