Knoxville Sunsphere given new lease of lifeThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 30th August 2006 (3529 views) The gold-coated Sunsphere in Knoxville, Tennessee is the subject of a comprehensive makeover plan from a local development firm.Kinsey Probasco Hays and Associates is a Chattanooga based company that wants to give the outdated landmark, a symbol of the city since it hosted the World's Fair in 1982, a facelift. Regarded by many locals as an outdated relic, the 24-carat gold plated Sunsphere has been largely a redundant shell in recent years, although the area around it in the city's World's Fair Park has undergone substantial redevelopment and landscaping. The firm plans to turn the interior of the 266-foot tower's glass sphere into a restaurant and office space. The observation deck at the foot of the golden ball that sits atop the structure will also be renovated and reopened. City Council officials heard the plans at a meeting last week and are yet to vote on the exact proposals, although the local authorities have approved a spending plan of around $1 million to clean up the inside and correct several major electrical and plumbing problems before new tenants are confirmed.
