Work is beginning on the Wiradjuri study centre in Condobolin, Australia, which is being built as one of the items in the native title deed for the Lake Cowal gold mine, ABC News Online reports.

Lake Cowal is in the heart of the Wiradjuri area and Barrick's gold project has been the cause for some concern among protesters.

However, the latest development will see ten Aborigines beginning jobs creating the materials for building the study centre. The centre itself will help to give Aboriginal people the skills they need for certain jobs.

Percy Knight, chief executive of the Wiradjuri-Condobolin Corporation said that the methods used to teaching local people would suit the way that Aboriginal people learn.

Under its corporate social responsibility framework, Barrick is "committed to making a positive difference in the communities in which it lives and works".
