Oxiana mine likely to receive go-ahead

Wednesday, 23rd August 2006 (2843 views)

Oxiana's copper and gold mine at Prominent Hill in Australia is expected to receive approval, according to The Australian.

Located 650 kilometres from Adelaide in South Australia, the mine will employ up to 800 people during its peak construction phase.

Oxiana said that 400 permanent jobs will be created when production begins, which it hopes will happen in the latter half of 2008.

The employment opportunities will add to those created by the expansion of BHP Billiton's Olympic copper and uranium mine, located at Roxby Downs.

Oxiana's Prominent Hill is expected to produce up to 130,000 ounces of gold, along with 100,000 tonnes of copper concentrate.

The company believes that "working to the highest standards of health and safety, environmental management and social responsibility are as important as exemplary corporate governance".
