Newmont committed to aiding whole of Ghana

Tuesday, 22nd August 2006 (2877 views)

Newmont Ghana Gold has said it is committed to developing the talents of young people throughout the West African country.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Newmont's external affairs director for Africa, Dr Chris Anderson, said that 500 million cedis (£20,000) had been given to the 2006 Newmont Ghana National Youth Achievers Awards.

This underlined the fact that the company is investing in the whole of the nation, not just in the areas where it operates.

"This is one of the ways by which we can reach the common goal of reducing poverty and improving on livelihoods through generating sustainable economic activities," he said.

The awards scheme aims to educate Ghana's youth about community activism, political awareness and sustainable peace.

Dr Anderson continued: "Our vision is to create long-term value in the communities in which we operate. Therefore, recognising and empowering the youth through such capacity-building initiatives form a strong basis of our overall business strategy."

Newmont Ghana has so far spent around 1.4 billion cedis (£80,000) on youth schemes such as skills training in the Ahafo area, as well as 300 million cedis (£17,000) in Accra and Akyem.

The gold company has so far discovered 11 ore bodies in the Ahafo mine area.
