The Idaho-Maryland Mining Corporation is looking to reopen the Sixteen to One gold mine in Grass Valley, California, a move that would create a raft of new employment opportunities.

Sixteen to One has been mined since 1896 and Idaho-Maryland is convinced that millions of ounces of the precious metal remain untapped, TheUnion.com reports.

The firm is still waiting to see if its permit to re-open the mine will be accepted by the City of Grass Valley, but if it is it would create between 200 and 400 new direct jobs, as well as many more indirect jobs.

This could lead to local businesses reaping around $750 million per annum in direct and indirect revenue.

Former miner Jerry Nickels said he would like to see Sixteen to One open again as it would give a younger generation a chance to learn the mining trade.

"I would like to see it open if they're going to provide the job opportunities they're talking about," he said. "I hope it does open."

The company is "dedicated to re-opening the historic Idaho-Maryland gold mine and operating it as a forward-thinking, environmentally-responsible business that would be a source of jobs, revenue and pride to the city".
