Lafayette set to ask for Rapu Rapu approval

Thursday, 27th July 2006 (1417 views)

Lafayette Mining is set to ask the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to permit it to resume normal operations at the Rapu Rapu mine after it successfully completed a trial.

Following environmental transgressions, the mining firm voluntarily halted operations at the copper and gold mine last year.

But following warnings that the mine's closure would negatively impact the local economy, Lafayette was subsequently given permission to begin a 30-day trial.

The first phase of the trial has now been completed successfully, meeting all conditions set by DENR, the Philippine Star reports.

"Upon successful completion of the last stage of the test run, [Lafayette subsidiary] Rapu Rapu Processing Inc intends to apply for a permanent lifting order enabling it to commence normal operation," the miner said.

The company added that a test involving circulating water into the system to look for leakages had been completed ahead of schedule.
