Economist writer wins David Watt prizeFriday, 21st July 2006 (1671 views) Sophie Pedder of the Economist has won Rio Tinto's 2006 David Watt Prize for journalism.The prize, which rewards outstanding political journalism, was created in memory of leading political writer David Watt by Rio Tinto, which has extensive gold operations around the world. Ms Pedder's article, entitled 'Spot the difference', examined Franco-American relationships today and in history. The judging panel was hosted by Rio Tinto's chairman, Paul Skinner, who also hosted the presentation of the award. He said that this year's entries which also included three other pieces from the Economist were of a high standard and that the judges had been spoilt for choice. He also congratulated the Economist itself, as it has never before won the David Watt prize despite being shortlisted many times before. The speaker at the prize ceremony was Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow, who spoke about the changing nature of news in the digital age. Entries for the David Watt prize have to be less than 5,000 words in length. The winner's prize money was this year increased to £10,000.
