China is likely to pour $600 million into a hydroelectric dam project in Ghana that will boost the country's gold and iron ore industries, according to Reuters.

Chinese officials made the announcement during a tour of Africa by Chinese premier Wen Jiabao. The project will go towards cementing relationships between Ghana and the world's most populous country, as well as providing basic amenities to local people.

"The President [of Ghana] presented the Bui Dam project to the Chinese as one of his priority projects and we're confident it will get funding," said Ghana's Chinese ambassador, Yaw Afari-Donkor.

Finance minister Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu added that the project would benefit local communities as well as helping local industry.

"The Bui Dam will make a big economic impact for mining iron ore and gold in the north of the country and it will improve power supply for everybody," he said.
