Australian gold mine close to approval

Thursday, 29th June 2006 (3277 views)

The Prominent Hill copper and gold mine in Australia has moved a step closer to opening, bringing the prospect of hundreds of jobs nearer.

Final applications for operations at the mine, which is located in the north-west of South Australia, are with the local government, ABC News reports.

It is hoped that full production at the development will be reached by 2008 and that the mine will generate around 700 jobs in all.

Project owner Oxiana has been in positive consultations with the State government and foresees no problems now that applications have been submitted to the Environment Protection Authority and Department of Primary Industry and Resources SA.

Approval is expected in the latter part of July.

Oxiana is committed to responsible corporate practices and believes that "good relations and the support and endorsement of our activities by the communities in which we operate are fundamental to long-term operational and financial success".
