Australian mining company Azumah Resources is due to begin operations in the northern sector of Ghana within a few months, leading to economic development in the area.

The firm has been prospecting for minerals including gold since the beginning of the year, African News Dimension reports, pumping around $1 million into the project so far.

Ghana's minister of mines, lands and forestry, Professor Dominic Fobih, welcomed the imminent start of Azumah's operations.

Speaking at a reception hosted by Australian high commissioner to Ghana John Richardson, Professor Fobih said the project would bring royalty payments to local communities and support the development of the country.

He was confident that social responsibilities would be upheld and called for further business relationships between the two countries.

Mining responsibility in Ghana was given a boost recently when Newmont Ghana Gold and Gold Fields Ghana signed an agreement intended to uphold human rights and work towards community development.
