Barrick North Mara, a gold mining firm with operations in Tanzania, has donated mosquito nets to a local community and awarded prizes to the winners of schools sports events.

Schoolchildren in Tarime, in the north of the country, participated in sports events and were awarded sports equipment, exercise books and cash as prizes, Tanzania Standard Newspapers reports.

Barrick social development coordinator Fatuma Mssumi said that the mosquito nets would be handed out to the children and some health facilities near the area's gold mine, which is operated by the Canadian miner.

The general manager at the mine, Mr Robusher, said that "Barrick North Mara is happy to continue supporting children in this area in various sectors and it will continue doing so".

A function was organised and financed last year by the company at a local school to aid social development in the region.

Under its corporate social responsibility commitment, Barrick is "working to ensure that we address local human rights issues and concerns and that [they] are not complicit in human rights abuses".
