ICMM publishes biodiversity guideFriday, 23rd June 2006 (1387 views) The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) has published a guide to help mining companies improve their biodiversity performance. The council aims to maintain good standards in the mining and metals industry and the new publication specifically gives practical biodiversity measures that can be employed by mining firms "at all stages of their operations". The guide, which is available for downloading at ICMM's website, is split into four sections a background to biodiversity; managing biodiversity in everyday operations; methods for assessing biodiversity; and supporting materials/checklists. "Demonstrating a commitment to biodiversity conservation is now an essential element of sustainable development for the mining and metals industry," said ICMM's secretary general, Paul Mitchell. The guide was produced as part of a dialogue between the ICMM and the World Conservation Union. It will supplement the ICMM's Sustainable Development Framework brochure, which was released last month and outlined the ten Principles which member companies should adhere to. The latest firm to become a member of the ICMM was diversified mining group Xstrata.
