The Cripple Creek & Victoria Gold Mining company (CC&V) owns the Cripple Creek mining district in Colorado and produces more than 300,000 troy ounces of gold per year.

The company employs more than 300 people and offers equal opportunities to both men and women.

Although in the past it was believed that women working in a mine would bring bad luck, the company is enlightened in that regard.

"We don't discriminate," CC&V community affairs manager Jane Mannon told the Colorado Springs Business Journal. "In fact, 20 per cent of the haul truck drivers are women. Actually, the maintenance guys like the women drivers better because they don't 'hot dog' the trucks."

Mannon also points out that CC&V respects the community in which it works and brings enormous benefits to the surrounding area.

"Our offices are in Victor – we restored an old building downtown," she said. "I think our taxes account for about 70 per cent of the town's budget. We try to be good citizens and good neighbours."

Cripple Creek & Victor is a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti and Golden Cycle Corporation. It has been extracting precious metals since 1976.
