Phillipines govt refuses arbitrary mining banFriday, 26th May 2006 (1372 views) Industry experts have welcomed the refusal by the government of the Philippines to introduce an arbitrary ban against mining.Officials at Australasian Philippine Mining Inc.'s (APMI) Quirino-Nueva Vizcaya project claimed that the action would guarantee the economic development of the local community. The government's commitment to mining will see it honour its contracts with local companies, which will have the knock-on effect of providing jobs and benefiting education, health and environmental programs. At the Barangay Didipio gold and copper project at Nueva Vizcaya, this will guarantee investment of at least $190,000 for social development and $4.7 million for environmental programs. The government of the Philippines recently reaffirmed its commitment to ethical and responsible mining at a press conference. The environment and natural resources secretary, Angleo T Reyes, stressed that the country's natural resources should be developed to improve people's quality of life.
