Kumba looks to improve safetyTuesday, 23rd May 2006 (1402 views) In a move that emphasises its commitment to health and safety, mining and metals company Kumba Resources is engaged in reworking its safety structures. The South African company's group safety manager, Gerrit van Tonder, told Mining Weekly that Kumba wants to exceed the government's target of improving year-on-year safety performance by 20 per cent in 2006. The company has the 'I Care rules' programme in place, which are focused on the human aspect of safety, especially in high-risk areas. "Lifting and material handling pose the largest safety threats across our spectrum of business units," said Mr Van Tonder. "Second to that is vehicle safety, although one will find that in each business unit the I Care rules have been adapted to add extra focus areas depending on what its primary activity is." Also being implemented by Kumba is Pivot, a system that logs incidents are logged and triggers the appropriate response. Van Tonder notes that the system will ensure that incidents do not get lost in the paper trail. Kumba Resources has its headquarters in Pretoria and has operations in Africa, Asia and Australia.
