New contracts to help retrenched Newmont workersMonday, 22nd May 2006 (1415 views) Newmont Ghana Gold expects to employ around 1,000 retrenched workers locally when it begins production at its Brong Ahafo construction site this summer, Ghana Web reports.Around 1,400 of the 3,500 workers employed by Newmont at Brong Ahafo have been retrenched. Newmont Ghana Gold's manager of learning and development, Colin Maddocks, thanked the workers for their dedication to the company and advised them to use the skills they had learned to benefit their communities in the future. Mr Maddocks also stressed Newmont's commitment to working together with local communities for their mutual benefit and towards the sustainable development of mining areas. The company also noted that it had awarded several contracts to local businesses which would open up significant business opportunities for the retrenched workers. Newmont took over the Ahafo project in Ghana as part of the acquisition of Normandy Mining in 2002. The company is the world's largest producer of gold and employs around 14,000 people globally.
