Experts adopt mining safety code

Thursday, 18th May 2006 (1357 views)

The ethical commitment of the mining industry was reiterated as a new code on safety was adopted by experts representing workers, employers and governments.

The Code of Practice on Safety and Health in Underground Coalmines was adopted by 23 experts on Saturday and will be submitted to the governing body of the International Labour Organisation in November for endorsement.

The code establishes a framework to specify the roles of the various players in the industry, as well as setting up a method of identifying dangers and minimising risks related to underground coalmining operations.

New technologies, improved training and increased investment have led to continual improvements in the coalmining industry, which is reflected in other strands of the global mining community.

The International Council on Mining and Metals, which works to disseminate good practice in the mining industry, recently released its Sustainable Development Framework in order to help members meet sustainable requirements.

The framework sets out ten key principles that include maintaining ethical business practice, respecting human rights and working to improve environmental performance.
