World Cup gold trophy in Rooney's sights

Friday, 24th March 2006 (3832 views)

England's Wayne Rooney will be disappointed unless his team walk away with the stunning gold World Cup this year in the international football championships.

Playing in his first World Cup tournament, the prodigious striker is confident England can claim the trophy this summer.

Mr Rooney came face to face with the treasured item on Thursday when it made an appearance in London as part of a world tour.

He told the BBC: "We have a lot of good players in the squad and we will be disappointed if we don't come back with the World Cup.

"We have a good chance. We have a lot of experienced players and a lot of young players as well."

The World Cup trophy is made from solid gold and malachite and was originally sculpted by Silvio Gazzaniga.

Standing 36 cm high and made of solid 18-carat gold, it weighs an impressive 4,970 grammes and has room for 17 plaques bearing the names of the winners.
