A series of gold-plated decorative rifles are being produced by a gun designer in Colorado.

Brian Nesby of Rocky Mountain Firearms visits historic locations in the US, researches the areas and engraves local history onto the rifles, the Daily Record reports.

And his latest design, a 24-carat gold plated Winchester Model 1894 rifle that features scenes from Morris County's past, carries a price tag of $3,660.

The inside of the barrel, magazine tube, receiver, hammer, trigger, tang undercarriage and crescent butt plate are all coated with gold.

And although the guns are fully operational, Mr Nesby does not expect the buyers to actually use them.

"Even though they are rifles and they are 100 per cent functional, I don't know of anyone who's going to take one of these out and shoot them," he said. "It's a piece of history and a piece of artwork."

A proof rifle and ten others – which typically take around four months to make - are to be created. After that, no more will be made.
