Chennai should be a gold hub in India, according to a top jeweller, newstodaynet.com reports.

L K S Syed Ahamed, president of the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants' Association, called on the government to support the southwestern city, formerly known as Madras, and help it fulfil its potential.

"The state government's support is needed to make Chennai a gold hub in the country," he said. "Chennai has great potential to become as much of a gold hub as Dubai, so both the gold industry and the government should join hands to make it a reality."

Chennai recently hosted the Gold Jewellery India International Exhibition 2006 (GJIIE), where around Rs 200 crore worth of gold jewels were on display.

Noting the region's ability to bring industry people together, GJIIE chairman Uday Kumar Vummidi said: "The response to the business-to-business trade event was good and major contacts were established through this."

Flamboyance and glamour were the order of the day at the exhibition. The finale saw models attired in rich brocade together with traditional North Indian jewellery fit for a queen.
