Gold sparkles on the catwalk

Fashion weeks in New York, Milan and Paris have played host to a resurgence of gold as the designer's metal of choice.

Leading fashion designers such as Marc Jacob, Nicole Miller and Vera Wang are just some of those who have made the catwalks sparkle with gold jewellery and fabrics, the People's Daily Online reported.

The trend was also detected in jewellery stores in China during the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival.

Robert Coin's "Roses" collection featured white, yellow and rose gold pendants and rings, while Rosata's "Flowers" collection includes a necklace made of intense yellow gold and enamel.

Cynthia Unninayar of the International Jewellery Quorum magazine said: "The fashion in jewellery this year is the momentous shift away from gemstones towards heavy-metal jewels, and towards jewels that luxuriate in the glory of gold, since gold is the noblest metal of them all."

Gold is also performing well in the wider world. Producer Barrick Gold recently posted a 12 per cent increase in fourth quarter earnings from a year previously and the Swiss watch industry has reported record sales of gold watches.
